Sound is not working on your Toshiba laptop? Sometimes there is no sound at all, and sometimes sound is cutting out. This could be rather annoying. But don’t worry. You can fix the sound issue easily.

Why is sound not working on my Toshiba laptop? It could be your audio device issue, your audio driver problem, or the sound settings in your computer. Before getting started, you’ll need to troubleshoot and figure out where your problem lies in.

Follow these fixes

Here are possible solutions for sound not working on laptop. You shouldn’t have to try them all; just work your way down the list until everything’s working again.

  1. Make sure the sound isn’t muted
  2. Check headphones or speakers work properly
  3. Make sure your audio device is enabled
  4. Update your audio driver
  5. Run the sound troubleshooter
  6. Configure sound settings

Fix 1: Make sure the sound isn’t muted

Sometimes sound on your laptop can be accidentally muted. In these circumstances, you’ll no doubt come across the no sound issue from your laptop. Therefore, be sure not to mute the sound.

Click the sound icon at the bottom right corner, and drag the slider to adjust the sound volume to medium or large, then play sound again to see if it works.

If your sound isn’t muted but sound won’t work properly, don’t worry. Move on to the next step.

Fix 2: Check headphones or speakers work properly

If the sound problem occurs when headphones or speakers are plugged in to your laptop, make sure your headphones or speakers are working properly.

You can try to plug your headphones or speakers to another laptop, and see if it works properly. If they are not working at all, then it looks like a hardware problem on your headphones or speakers, and you should head to the manufacturer; if they work perfectly when plugging on another laptop, then the problem lies in your Toshiba laptop, and you can move to the next solution.

Fix 3: Make sure your audio device is enabled

If your audio device has been disabled in Windows, anything related to the sound won’t work at all. So you should check and make sure the audio device in your Toshiba laptop is enabled.

Here are the instructions:

1) On your keyboard, press the Windows logo key and R at the same time to invoke the Run box.

2) Type devmgmt.msc and click OK.

3) Double click Sound, video and game controllers.

4) Right click on your audio device (in my case it’s AMD High Definition Audio Device), and click Enable device.

If you see Disable device in the right-click context menu, it means that your audio device is enabled already. Then you can click Disable device then Enable device to re-enable it.

5) Restart your computer, and play sound to see if your issue has been resolved.

Your sound problem still persists? Move to the next method.

Fix 4: Update your audio driver

An audio driver problem can result in your sound not working. For instance, if your audio driver is missing or corrupted, your laptop won’t play any sound at all. To rule it out as the cause, you can update your audio driver to the latest version.

You can update your audio driver by navigating to the manufacturer website of your device, then download and install the latest driver. If you don’t have the time, patience or skills to update the driver manually, you can do it automatically with Driver Easy.

Driver Easy will automatically recognize your system and find the correct drivers for it. You don’t need to know exactly what system your computer is running, you don’t need to be troubled by the wrong driver you would be downloading, and you don’t need to worry about making a mistake when installing.

You can update your drivers automatically with either the FREE or the Pro version of Driver Easy. But with the Pro version it takes just 2 steps (and you get full support and a 30-day money back guarantee):

1) Download and install Driver Easy.

2) Run Driver Easy and click the Scan Now button. Driver Easy will then scan your computer and detect any problem drivers.

3) Click Update All to automatically download and install the correct version of all the drivers that are missing or out of date on your system (this requires the Pro version – you’ll be prompted to upgrade when you click Update All).

Note: You can do it for free if you like, but it’s partly manual.

4) Restart Windows to take effect.

Now try playing sound in your laptop and your problem should be fixed.

Fix 5: Run the sound troubleshooter

Windows has introduced the built-in troubleshooter which allows Windows users to troubleshoot the hardware problem and try to fix it. So if sound is not working in your Toshiba laptop, you can run the Windows troubleshooter and see if helps resolve your problem.

Here’s what you can do:

1) Type Control Panel in the search bar on your desktop, and click Control Panel to open it.

2) Ensure to choose View by Large icons or View by Small icons, and click Troubleshooting.

3) Click Hardware and Sound.

4) Click Playing Audio to find and fix problems with playing sound.

5) Click Next.

6) Follow the on-screen instructions to finish the process.

Hopefully Windows troubleshooter detects your sound issue and fixes it for you.

Still no luck? Don’t give up hope.

Fix 6: Configure sound settings

The wrong sound settings in your laptop can lead to the sound not working issues, so you can adjust the sound settings in Windows.

Step 1: Set your audio device as default

1) Type Control Panel in the search bar on your laptop, and click Control Panel to open it.

2) Ensure to choose View by Large icons or View by Small icons. Then click Sound.

3) In the Playback tab, right click the empty area and select Show Disabled Devices and Show Disconnected Devices.

4) From the list of the playback device, select your audio device and click Set Default.

Ensure there’s a green check mark next to your audio device.

5) Click Apply and OK to save your changes.

Now play sound and see if it works.

If this step doesn’t work, try step 2.

Step 2: Try Configure in sound settings

1) Type Control Panel in the search bar on your laptop, and click Control Panel to open it.

2) Ensure to choose View by Large icons or View by Small icons. Then click Sound.

3) In the Playback tab, right click the empty area and select Show Disabled Devices and Show Disconnected Devices.

4) From the list of the playback device, select your audio device and click Configure.

5) Follow the on-screen instructions to finish the process.

Once completed, play sound and see if it works.

Step 3: Test by different sound rates

1) Type Control Panel in the search bar on your laptop, and click Control Panel to open it.

2) Ensure to choose View by Large icons or View by Small icons. Then click Sound.

3) In the Playback tab, right click the empty area and select Show Disabled Devices and Show Disconnected Devices.

4) From the list of the playback device, select your audio device and click Properties.

5) Click the Advanced tab.

6) Choose different audio rates one by one and click Test.

7) Then see if the sound restarts to work. Try different rates until your sound begins to work again. Then click Apply and OK to save your changes.

Hopefully this post helps to fix sound not working on Toshiba laptop.
