Fix 1: Make sure your PC meets the system requirements for DayZ

DayZ FPS drops issue often occurs when the specs of your PC fails to meet the system requirements for DayZ. Before trying other fixes, you should make sure your PC meet the minimum system requirements for the game.

If your PC meets the system requirements for DayZ but the FPS drops issue persists, try the next fix to update your graphics driver.

Fix 2: Update your graphics driver

If your graphics driver is outdated or corrupted, it may cause the game FPS drops issue. Updating the graphics driver can not only enhance the performance of your graphics card, but also avoid many unexpected computer issues in the future.

There are two ways to update your graphics driver: manually and automatically.

Update your graphics driver manually – You can update your graphics driver manually by going to the manufacturer’s website, and searching for the latest driver for your graphics card.

Update your drivers automatically – If you don’t have the time, patience or computer skills to update your graphics driver manually, you can, instead, do it automatically with Driver Easy.

You don’t need to know exactly what system your computer is running, you don’t need to risk downloading and installing the wrong driver, and you don’t need to worry about making a mistake when installing. Driver Easy handles it all.

1. Download and install Driver Easy.
2. Run Driver Easy and click Scan Now. Driver Easy will then scan your computer and detect any problem drivers.

The developers of DayZ release regular game patches to fix bugs. It’s possible that a recent patch has caused the FPS drops issue, and that a new patch is required to fix it.

If a patch is available, just download and install it to see if it can fix the FPS drops issue; if there’s no patches available, or if the issue persists after you installed the latest patch, try the next fix, below.

Fix 4: Modify the graphics settings

Modifying the graphics settings is another easy fix to boost FPS in the game. You need to modify the graphics settings both in Nvidia Control Panel and in the game.

1. On your keyboard, press the Windows logo key and R at the same time to open the Run dialog. Then type control and press Enter to open Control Panel.
   
2. View Control Panel by Large icons.
   
3. Click NVIDIA Control Panel to open it.
   
4. Click 3D Settings and select Adjust image settings with preview. Then select Use my preference emphasizing and drag the slider to the left.

1. Launch DayZ and modify the following in-game video settings:
   Vsync = Disabled
   Terrain = Very Low
   Shadows = Disabled
   Clouds = Disabled
   Video memory = Auto
   Texture detail = Low
   Texture filtering = Low
   Antialiasing = Disabled
   Alpha to coverage = Disabled
   Edgesmoothing = FXAA Low
   Postprocess quality = Disabled
2. Apply the changes and launch DayZ.

Fix 5: Restrict applications and downloads in the background

The DayZ FPS drops issue may occur if you’re running some other applications or programs at the same time. So try restricting applications and downloads in the background before playing the game to see if this issue reappears. Here is how to do it:

1. On your keyboard, press Ctrl, Shift and Esc at the same time to open Task Manager. You will be prompted for permission. Click Yes to open Task Manager.
2. Select any other applications and programs that take up a large amount of CPU, memory and network and then click End task to close it.
   

Run DayZ again to see if you can play the game smoothly. If the FPS in DayZ still drops, try the next fix, below.

Fix 6: Temporarily disable the third-party antivirus application

This issue may also be caused by your third-party antivirus application. Since the third-party antivirus application hooks very deep into your system, it may interfere with Day.

Since DayZ consumes a lot of memory and CPU usage when you’re playing a game, many third-party antivirus application may regard it as a potential threat and DayZ may not run as expected. You can try temporarily turning off your third-party antivirus application to see if this issue persists.

If the game can run smoothly after you disabled the third-party antivirus application, you should add the Steam client and the executable file of DayZ as exceptions to your third-party antivirus application.

Fix 7: Change the power plan of your PC

Most PC are configured to Balanced, which may limits the operating capacity of your graphics card and CPU. If the power plan of your PC is Power saver or Balanced, you might run into the game FPS drops issue.

To fix the game lag issue, try changing the power plan of your PC to High performance. Here is how to do it:

1. On your keyboard, press the Windows logo key and R at the same time, then type powercfg.cpl and press Enter.
   
2. In the pop-up window, expand Hide additional plans and select High performance.
   

Launch DayZ to see if you resolve the FPS drops issue. If not, try the next fix below to adjust your Windows system for the best performance.

Fix 8: Adjust your Windows system for the best performance

If your PC fails to meet the recommended system requirements for DayZ, try adjusting your Windows system for the best performance. Here is how to do it:

1. On your keyboard, press the Windows logo key and R at the same time to open the Run dialog. Type control sysdm.cpl and press Enter to open the System Properties window.
   
2. In the pop-up window, navigate to the Advanced tab, then click Settings… in the Performance section.
   
3. Select Adjust for best performance and click OK.
